FRIENDS WITH MONEY
Label: Milled Pavement Records
Catalog#: MP050
Since the late 90's, Portland, Maine-based producer/multi-instrumentalist C Money Burns has been quietly putting together his unique brand of wistful, cosmic jazz harmonies inter- twined with alien melodies, over-funked bass and intricate, hip hop-influenced beat pro- gramming, incorporating the talents of vocalists and other musicians from around the world. This was, for a long time, a private pursuit for Burns, secondary to playing and re- cording with groups like CMJ-charting slowcore collective Seekonk.
After aligning with avant-garde urban underground label Milled Pavement under his own name for some choice remixes and their groundbreaking Goosebumps compilation series, Burns has focused his talents on the pop song form, incorporating dissonant R&B, freaked-out verses and a decidedly danceable sense of arrangement.
These disparate influences, from the Warp backcatalogue to 60's baroque chamber-pop to Steely Dan combine on his debut Milled Pavement LP Friends With Money (MP050) to form a post-modern party, celebrating retro-futurist mathfunk, horror-house sampleadelics and bit-crushed disco strings, featuring Milled Pavement goth-rap mainstay Brzowski, tire- less punk rapper MC Homeless, West-coast freestyle legend/Project Blowed founder Riddlore?, postmodern poet k-the-i??? and a host of other ridiculously talented and sto- ried artists.
C Money Burns' genre-spanning material, productions and remixes have been released on a number of independent and boutique labels worldwide, such as Milled Pavement, brick.city.media, Fuller/Essex, Gamble, Cornmeal and Portland Records, and have been featured in independent films, commercial productions and syndicated programming.
